Your First Week in Procreate, Without the Overwhelm

You do not need forty brushes or a course. You need five gestures and one finished drawing. Here is the honest starting path.

The app opens and there is a blank canvas and a wall of icons, and most people freeze right there. So we are going to ignore ninety percent of it for a week.

The five things that matter on day one

  • Two-finger tap to undo, three-finger tap to redo. Muscle memory here saves you more time than any brush.
  • The Smudge tool sits next to the brush, and it blends. That is most of what makes digital painting feel soft.
  • Layers: keep your sketch on one, your color on another below it. That is the whole trick, honestly.
  • Alpha Lock, so you can paint inside a shape without coloring outside the lines.
  • The color drop: drag the disc onto an enclosed shape to fill it.

That is it. Do not touch Curves, ColorBalance, or the animation timeline yet. They are not going anywhere.

Finish something small

A single lemon. A mug. Your own hand. The goal of week one is not a good drawing. It is a finished one, because finishing teaches you where your gaps are and a half-drawing teaches you nothing.
